Label FAQ

The following FAQ addresses a few key points specific to our broadband labels. If you would like to learn more about our fiber service in general, check out our Fiber FAQ page.

The speeds listed on the broadband label for my plan are different than the speeds I’m experiencing in my home. Why?
The speed of your in-home connection can be impacted by many factors. The speeds we provide on each plan’s label are the speeds that members can expect during normal conditions with a wired (ethernet) connection. Using a wireless connection (Wi-Fi) limits the speed you can expect, because Wi-Fi signals can be affected by distance, age of equipment, walls, other devices, and more. If you are using older devices or your own router, they may not be able to handle the speeds offered by your Consolidated Fiber plan. Sometimes, delays can also be caused by server issues at the site or service you are trying to access online.

Network congestion is rarely an issue with Consolidated Fiber, but you could experience less than optimum speeds if you have numerous devices connected and using data in your home at once. We offer unlimited data, so we will never slow down your speeds for using too much, but it could naturally cause slower performance if you are using a lot at one time.

If you consistently experience speeds that are significantly lower than the speeds on your plan’s label, please reach out to our support team to troubleshoot the potential causes of the slowdown.

What is the Aid to Construction Fee, and why is there not a dollar amount listed on the label?
The Aid to Construction Fee does not apply to everyone, and it is determined on a case-by-case basis. For each new subscriber, Consolidated will cover up to $1,500 worth of material and work hours to run fiber line from our infrastructure by the road up to your home. For many of our subscribers, $1,500 is more than enough to cover their connection, and they will not be charged.

However, in order to avoid having some members subsidize the cost of connecting to others, we do have to charge individual members if it will cost more than $1,500 to connect to their home. Typically, this occurs when a home sits back, far away from the road, meaning it takes more time and materials to connect. This fee is determined upon your site survey, and there are no penalties if you choose not to move forward.

What is the purpose of the Activation Fee?
The Activation Fee covers the cost of the time and labor of the in-home installation. This occurs after fiber has been connected to the outside of your home and involves a Consolidated Fiber Technician running the fiber optic cable through your home to connect the Optical Network Terminal (ONT).  During this installation, our technician will help you set up Wi-Fi, connect devices, troubleshoot, and test to ensure that you have excellent service from day one.

Label Glossary

Broadband labels and internet plans can feel confusing if you are unfamiliar with the technical jargon. Check out these key terms to help you understand the labels and make informed decisions about your internet service.

  • The Internet: A global, interconnected network of devices that allows for communication and information sharing, regardless of location.

  • Local Area Network (LAN): A collection of devices that are connected to the internet in a single location, like a home or office building. Typically, devices in an LAN connect to the internet through Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

  • Ethernet: A way of connecting to the internet through a cable, also called a “wired” connection. Ethernet is typically used to connect devices like computers, TVs, or gaming systems. When compared to wireless (Wi-Fi) connections, ethernet is generally more reliable and consistent, and it can transfer data at higher speeds.

  • Wi-Fi: A way of connecting to the internet without physical cables. Wi-Fi transmits data using radio waves through a router, which is usually connected to a modem. Wi-Fi is easy to use and can meet the needs of most users and devices, but it is less reliable than a wired connection – it typically has higher latency, and it is susceptible to interference and slowdowns.

  • ONT: The device we place in your home that connects your home to our fiber network. The Consolidated ONT has Wi-Fi and ethernet ports for all home devices to connect to.

  • Router: A device that connects home devices to the internet. This is included in the Consolidated all-in-one ONT.

  • Wi-Fi Extender: A device used to extend the Wi-Fi signal in your home.

  • Latency: Latency is the time that it takes for data to travel from one point to another on the internet, and it is measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower latency means data travels more quickly – pages load faster, video calls and online games are smoother, etc. High latency can cause delays or lag. Latency is measured in milliseconds. 20-40 ms is generally considered to be good latency – our plans offer 9 ms.
